A Regina man convicted in the beating death of a toddler has been sentenced to life in prison with no eligibility of parole for 12 years.

Adam Cyr was earlier found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of two-year-old Natalia Shingoose. The little girl was found dead at her home in June 2012.

During the trial, the court heard the child was beaten so badly that her broken ribs lacerated one of her lungs and liver. She died of internal bleeding.

Cyr was living with the girl’s mother, Amanda Trevors, at the time of the toddler’s death. He has denied killing the girl.

"My daughter cared about him. I would have never trusted her with somebody," Trevors said outside court.

"It does bother me that he can't be a man and take responsibility for what he's taken from my whole family."

Cyr's lawyer, Bob Hrycan, argued during the trial that Trevors was involved in drug trafficking and people who filtered in and out of the house could have committed the crime.

Hrycan has already filed an appeal.

He said he doesn't understand how the jury could have ruled out the possibility of another perpetrator.

"I do not believe that anyone in this country should be convicted on the kind of evidence ... in this trial."
