The number of bankruptcies filed by businesses in Saskatchewan more than doubled in May from a year earlier, according to statistics released Thursday.

The federal Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy says seven businesses filed for bankruptcy in the province during the month, up from three in May 2015.

Three businesses in Saskatchewan filed proposals in the same period, an increase of 50 per cent.

Consumer bankruptcies in the province rose 18 per cent on a year-over-year basis to 117, while consumer proposals climbed 54 per cent to 131.
