BRONCOS ACQUIRE HITMEN CAPTAIN

The Swift Current Broncos pulled off a nine player, blockbuster trade with the Calgary Hitmen on Saturday afternoon acquiring Matteo Gennaro, Beck Malenstyn and a fifth round draft pick in the 2018 WHL bantam draft.

Heading to Calgary are veteran forwards Riley Stotts and Connor Chaulk, defenceman Dom Schmiemann, the playing rights to forward Josh Prokop, goaltending prospect Ethan Hein along with a second round pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft.

“We worked on it for a couple of weeks but the last 24 hours we’ve been getting down to the nuts and bolts of it and for our club, we just, the elephant in the room, we needed secondary scoring.” Broncos associate coach Ryan Smith said. “We’re not just getting a couple of guys who can put the puck in the net, we’re getting good all around players, big bodies and in the East that’s what it’s gonna take to get out of it, so we’re really happy with the additions.”

In Gennaro, the Broncos immediately address their need for additional scoring, picking up a player who scored 43 goals last season in Calgary and has already tallied 14 in 22 games this year. 19-year old Beck Malenstyn has three assists in four games for the Hitmen this season and is coming off an injury but is expected to return to the ice soon.  He’s a veteran of 200 Western Hockey League games and is expected to add depth to the Broncos blue line.

“We are thankful for their time in Swift Current” Broncos head coach Manny Viveiros said in a statement of his now traded players. Both players will join their new team Monday, November 27th.
