Wednesday was the first court appearance for a man who was shot when a car accelerated toward a Regina police officer, who was then dragged by the vehicle.
Kendall Bradley Bryant of Kamsack is charged with assaulting a police officer, assault with a weapon, possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime under $5,000.
The 24-year-old had a bruise near his right eye when he appeared in a Regina courtroom Wednesday afternoon. He was remanded into custody until his next court appearance, scheduled for Monday.
On Tuesday morning, two officers responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle in an alley in the 700 block of McTavish Street. The caller reported that someone had been knocking on the door of their home.
Police say when one of the officers approached the suspect vehicle, it accelerated toward him. The cop fired one shot through the windshield and the bullet penetrated the dashboard before hitting the driver in the right leg.
The officer then tried to enter the car through the driver’s side window and was dragged 20 to 30 feet, causing injuries to his leg and hand.
Both the suspect and the officer were taken to hospital, where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The 38-year-old officer who fired the shot will be required to undergo a psychological assessment before returning to duty.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident. An independent observer will be appointed by the Ministry of Justice to oversee the investigation.
