A Chihuahua that was stranded on Spruce Island on Wascana Lake is now safe in the arms of its owner.

The three-pound dog, named Lopez, had gone missing in Wascana Park over the Canada Day long weekend.

A member of the Regina Rowing Club noticed the animal and called the Humane Society.

Two animal protection officers tried to catch the tiny pooch earlier this week, but to no avail.

They tried again Friday morning, and rescued little Lopez within minutes of landing on the island.

The dog was hungry but unhurt. It was the first time the Regina Humane Society has rescued an animal by boat.
