The City of Regina is reducing its parks funding to deal with recent budget challenges.

In an effort to cut costs, the city has reduced its flower pot program from 400 pots throughout the community to 100 pots. The pots will now only be displayed downtown.

The city will also no longer spray parks with herbicide, starting this fall, which could lead to an increase in dandelions.

"Overall, the reductions equate to about $130,000 to the parks department,” said Ray Morgan, the city’s director of parks.

“In regards to our reductions in the fall herbicide program, we're just being consistent with other municipalities, as well, of our size or larger.”

The city says it will still spray athletic parks with herbicide to provide a playable, safe surface for athletes.

Lastly, the city will prune trees and shrubs less. The typical pruning cycle is 10 to 15 years, but the new changes mean cycles will be extended by sixth months.
