The Crown has withdrawn its case against a Saskatchewan man charged in the death of a miniature Schnauzer dog.

Ryan Funk was expected to face trial Thursday in Prince Albert on two charges of unnecessary cruelty to an animal.

The dog -- named Floyd -- died in June of last year, but details of what happened to the canine have not been released.

Two SPCA officials were to testify, but upon arrival at court they were told the charges had been withdrawn on Nov. 4.

Neither the Crown nor the defence has commented, but SPCA spokeswoman Leanne Roberts says the outcome is disheartening and shows that Saskatchewan has some of the weakest animal welfare laws in Canada.
