A dangerous offender hearing got underway Tuesday for a Regina man convicted of breaking into a home and sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl.

The Crown is seeking a dangerous offender designation for Donald Wilton, while the defence has asked that he be declared a long-term offender.

Wilton has spent more than three years in custody on remand since he was arrested for the offence, which dates back to August 2008.

The Crown wants Wilton to be sentenced to a further four years in jail, followed by a long-term supervision order.

Wilton has a lengthy criminal history that includes 24 convictions for violent offences.
