RCMP say a fire that damaged the former home of Carol King is now being investigated as arson.

Mounties say they made the determination based upon evidence gathered in the early stages of the investigation.

Police say a more detailed examination will be conducted today on the home, located north of Herschel.

Fire crews responded to the blaze around 9:30 a.m. Sunday. The fire caused significant damage to the main living area of the home and smoke damage throughout the house.

King, 40, disappeared from her home in August, sparking a widespread search that eventually ended with the discovery of her body a few weeks later on a rural property near Herschel.

Shortly before she went missing, King had told her family she feared for her safety.
