An early morning fire has gutted a hotel in a small community in east-central Saskatchewan.

The owner of Tequilas Hotel in Elfros says the fire started around 4 a.m. Thursday.

“It’s a really big loss for the community,” said Justin Thordarson, who has owned the hotel since 2007.

A witness who was among the first people at the scene told CTV News he saw smoke and flames coming from the hotel when he arrived.

Fire crews from nearby Wynyard extinguished the flames, which caused extensive damage to the building.

No one was inside the hotel at the time and nobody was injured.

RCMP and the provincial Office of the Fire Commissioner say the fire is not considered suspicious, and they are continuing to investigate to determine a cause.

Thordarson said he is not sure whether he will rebuild the hotel, which had been a fixture in the community since 1933.

Elfros is located about 200 kilometres northeast of Regina.
