A councillor and former chief of a Saskatchewan First Nation is facing drug and weapon charges.

On Tuesday, RCMP executed a drug warrant at a home on the Key First Nation north of Kamsack.

Officers arrested 64-year-old Clarence Papequash, a councillor and former chief of the reserve.

Papequash faces five counts of drug trafficking, in addition to various firearm-related charges. He is also charged with possession of property obtained by crime.

Papequash remains in custody and is scheduled to make his next court appearance Feb. 22.

In 2014, Papequash was given a six-month conditional sentence after he was convicted of trafficking morphine while he was chief of the Key First Nation.
