Construction work on Regina’s new stadium officially got underway with a groundbreaking ceremony Monday.

Mayor Michael Fougere was among the dignitaries who ceremoniously turned the sod on the site of the $278 million project at Evraz Place.

The stadium builder, PCL Construction Management, says more than 300,000 cubic metres of dirt will be excavated and removed from the site through the summer.

That’s about 25,000 truckloads of dirt – enough to fill 112 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The excavation will be completed in three phases.

Piling work is scheduled to start in July, with four cranes being erected from August through October.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are set to play their first game in the new facility in June 2017.
