After much debate and discussion, the historic Connaught school in Regina will not be designated a heritage site.

City council voted against the designation by an 8-2 margin at its meeting Monday night.

Councillors Sharon Bryce and Shawn Fraser supported the motion, with Coun. Barbara Young abstaining from voting on the matter.

Connaught will close its doors at the end of this school year, and the century-old building will be demolished, but no timeline has been announced.

The Regina Public School Board plans to build a new school on the property by 2017.
