A prominent and revered First Nations elder in Saskatchewan has died.

Alma Kytwayhat, a senator with the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, died Monday at age 69.

in 2009, Kytwayhat was awarded the Saskatchewan Order of Merit for her work in preserving and promoting the Cree language and culture.

She has been featured in several television commercials and promotional videos over the years, sharing traditional stories with children.

Kytwayhat was also heavily involved in training teachers about aboriginal issues, and served as an elder with the Canadian Armed Forces.

A memorial service for Kytwayhat will be held at the Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation at 2 p.m. today.
