The fate of three men accused of murdering Shawn Douglas is now in the hands of a jury.
The panel of six men and six women has been deliberating behind closed doors since 2:40 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
Now that the jury is sequestered, several publication bans have been lifted, including one on the broadcast of a cellphone video of the three accused on the night of Douglas' murder.
The video, taken by a neighbour who heard a commotion outside their home, shows Douglas' SUV, and a stolen Honda Civic parked on the street. A group of nine people can be seen inside and moving around the vehicles.
One of the accused, Joshua Wilson, is seen struggling to close the trunk of the car. Though he can't be seen, various testimony heard over the past six weeks indicates Douglas is inside the trunk, fighting to keep the door from closing.
The video also shows another of the accused, Johnathon Peepeetch, punching one of the witnesses in this case, Michael McNab, before everyone climbs into the vehicles and they both drive away.
Various testimony over the past six weeks indicates both vehicles then leave the city, and drive to a remote, wooded location where Douglas is killed.
The 54-year-old’s death was extremely violent, and evidence presented at this trial has been very graphic.
At least one juror had to be dismissed after complaining of anxiety after hearing all the details.
The judge also made special note in her charge to the jury to point out that two of the witnesses who testified are themselves also charged in connection with Douglas' murder. The judge cautioned the jury against putting too much faith in testimony from individuals who may have a vested interest in the outcome of this trial.
Wilson, Peepeetch, and Dennis Thompson are all charged with first-degree murder in the death of Douglas, whose body was found in a wooded area northeast of Regina in August 2014.
