Kindergarten students in Regina’s Catholic school division are getting a chance to learn about school bus safety and become comfortable with the bus before their first day of school.

The division is hosting its First Ride program on Thursday and Friday. The program teaches kids where the safe zones are around a bus, how to properly enter and exit a bus and what to do in an emergency.

“It's all about the children, it's all about safety and the only way you can truly make sure a child is safe is if you educate them,” said transportation officer Elena Chase.

The division has 89 propane buses that are equipped with GPS so parents can track where their child is using the school division’s online portal.

Kristen Bassendowski was among the parents who came out on Thursday to ease their child’s fear of the bus.

“(My son has) never been on one before,” she said. “So, I thought it was a great idea to kind of get them introduced to the idea, so it's not so scary or new for them the first day of school.”
