A Regina man has been found guilty of manslaughter in the death of an 18-month-old child.
Raime Myers was in the care of Jason Will when he died on July 9, 2009. Will was engaged to the child’s mother at the time.
The judge ruled several pieces of evidence inadmissible, including portions of police interviews and testimony from a doctor supporting the belief that Will had smothered the child. During the trial, Will denied smothering the child, but admitted to putting his hand over Myer’s mouth in an effort to stop the toddler from crying.
Still, the judge said he believed beyond a reasonable doubt that the child died because of Will’s actions.
Will remains free on bail until sentencing on August 8. The crown plans to seek a significant jail term.
