Today is the deadline for Saskatchewan teachers and the province to reach a deal in contract talks before a government-appointed mediator intervenes in the dispute.

If an agreement isn't reached today, Calgary-based mediator Richard Hornung will prepare a report to the provincial labour minister and cabinet. The report will include non-binding recommendations on resolving the contract battle.

Earlier this month, the Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation agreed to suspend all job action and work with the mediator to reach a settlement.

The teachers' federation is asking for a 16.3 per cent wage increase over three years, while the province has offered 5.5 per cent over the same timeframe.

If a deal isn't reached today, Hornung will submit his report to the province by June 30.
