After a lengthy debate, city council voted down a proposal for a new building in the Cathedral neighbourhood.

Just after midnight on Tuesday, Regina councilors voted 6-4 to reject the proposal that would have seen a four story building with commercial space on the main floor and 29 residential units in three upper stories.

29 delegations were on the agenda to speak about the proposed development. Many were Cathedral area residents and Heritage Regina representatives who were against the development. Delegates raised concerns over the size of the building and increased traffic around Connaught School. They also did not agree with leveling a character home in the neighborhood to make way for a parking lot.

However, the business community welcomed the proposed building. John Hopkins with the Regina Chamber of Commerce called it a win-win for both the applicants and the community. Still, City Council agreed with the majority of delegates and decided not to approve the development.
