The city of Regina is trying to reduce traffic headaches for Rider fans in 2017.

On Monday night, city council approved a proposal to make transit rides free on Rider game days next season.

Currently, fans can take a shuttle to the games from four locations at malls across the city. The shuttle service begins 90 minutes before kickoff and costs $3.00.

“We’re going to increase that to two hours and 15 minutes before game time to allow customers to get there and enjoy some of the pre-game activities,” Nathan Luhning, manager of business development the city’s transit department, said Tuesday.

“Right now we run from four mall locations and we’re going to add one to the downtown to allow customers to potentially park down there and then get a ride to the game.”

The new system will also feature a ticket to ride program, offering free transit rides for anyone with a ticket to the game.

“The stadium is in a new location,” Luhning said. “There’s going to be fewer parking locations for a private automobile, so enhancing things like transit or pedestrian access to that stadium will only help the game day experience.”

The city plans to meet with the Roughriders soon to discuss putting the new plan in motion before the new Mosaic Stadium’s inaugural season.

The program is similar to ones offered in Edmonton and Ottawa on CFL game days.
