High winds wreaked havoc in Regina on Wednesday as an intense low-pressure system swept across southern Saskatchewan.

City Square Plaza was more like a wind tunnel Wednesday, with vendors and customers at Regina's farmers market doing their best to hold on to their stuff.

The strongest wind gusts recorded at the Regina airport were around 85 kilometres an hour. The fierce winds blew over construction signs, and even a Denny's restaurant sign hit the dirt and blew away from the Sandman Hotel & Suites in the city’s east end.

Environment Canada issued wind warnings and urged the public to take safety precautions.

"The biggest thing that people can do is keep their yards tidy (and) put away lawn furniture,” said meteorologist Brian Proctor.

“It’s really imperative that people keep their yards and their back areas… quite neat and tidy."

The wind warnings have since been lifted, but conditions are expected to remain gusty through Thursday.
