Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall is welcoming a ruling by the World Trade Organization, which says U.S. meat-labelling rules discriminate against Canadian livestock.

The WTO says the regulations -- known as COOL, or country-of-origin labelling -- treat Canadian and Mexican livestock less favourably than American livestock.

Wall says in a release that the ruling is a positive step for Saskatchewan's cattle and hog producers.

The government says Saskatchewan's cattle herd is the second-largest in Canada, while the province sends more than two million hogs to market a year.
