Saskatchewan and its two largest cities ranked highest in terms of crime severity in 2013, according to the latest statistics on police-reported crime.

Statistics Canada says Saskatchewan’s Crime Severity Index was the highest among the provinces at 125.7, which is down nine per cent from 2012.

Regina had the highest Crime Severity Index among Canada’s major cities at 109, while Saskatoon was second at 99.

Regina's crime rate of 8,069 per 100,000 people was the highest in the country, followed by Saskatoon with 7,958 per 100,000 people.

However, the crime rates in Regina and Saskatoon fell eight per cent and six per cent respectively from the previous year.

"We still are ranked number one, which is not where we want to be," said Regina Mayor Michael Fougere.

"It just means there’s more work that needs to be done by our community, by our police service. But our service does an outstanding job and the record shows that."

The national crime rate dropped eight per cent to 5,190 per 100,000 people, while the Crime Severity Index fell nine per cent to 68.7.
