The number of bankruptcies filed in Saskatchewan rose 20.5 per cent in June compared to a year earlier – the second highest increase among the provinces.

The federal Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy says there were 88 bankruptcies in the province in June, down 21.4 per cent from the previous month.

Only seven of those bankruptcies were filed by businesses, while the rest were filed by consumers.

Nationally, the number of bankruptcies fell 0.4 per cent on a year-over-year basis to 5,444.
