A 55-year-old man is facing a first-degree murder charge after a death on the Standing Buffalo First Nation.

RCMP were called to a home on the Saskatchewan First Nation, which is located a few kilometres northwest of Fort Qu’Appelle, at 3 p.m. New Year’s Day. The complaint involved a gun, police said in a media release.

A 28-year-old man, Mario Kaiswatum, was found dead inside the residence.

A man from Standing Buffalo, who was injured prior to police arriving at the scene, was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree murder, RCMP said. He was taken to hospital for treatment and, pending his release from hospital, is set to appear Monday in Fort Qu’Appelle Provincial Court.

An autopsy is scheduled at Saskatoon City Hospital that same day.

RCMP major crimes officers and Mounties in Fort Qu’Appelle are investigating the death alongside Regina forensic teams, the coroner’s office and police in Regina and Yorkton.
