The Saskatchewan government is trying to make construction zones safer for flag workers with an automated flagger assistance device.

The devices are a part of a pilot project put on by the government where a flag person controls the device from a distance away.

The Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure says the device will keep construction workers out of harm’s way of oncoming traffic.

"We've done a number of things over recent years to try to improve safety in the work zone including increased fines, the use of photo enforcement in work zones,” said ministry spokesperson Doug Wakabayashi.

“We've also done some work in simplifying our sign plans so it's easier for motorists to know what's expected from them and this is sort of the next step in continuing that continuous process in improving safety in work zones.”

The province says there are currently three of the devices in Saskatchewan, and more may be added in the future.
