A 42-year-old man has been charged after Regina police used a stun gun to arrest a man wielding two butcher knives.

Police were called Saturday at 1 a.m. to a home on the 5000 block of Second Avenue North where a man outside the residence was found holding two large knives.

Officers commanded him to drop the knives but he refused, according to a police media release. One officer fired a Taser — or conducted energy weapon — at the man, which allowed police to take him into custody.

Paramedics took the suspect to hospital as a precaution.

He was charged with possessing a weapon for a purpose dangerous to the public peace. He has since been released and is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 14.

A Regina police use of force committee will review the incident and the Saskatchewan Police Commission has been notified, as per policy whenever a conducted energy weapon is fired.
