Prince Albert Police are releasing few details about an incident which resulted in the death of a prisoner. The man was in police custody and ended up dying in hospital.

Deputy Chief Kelly Steinwand says police were called to Victoria Hospital around 6:30 Thursday morning. He says the man was arrested after an incident with hospital security.

"The subject of that complaint was a 44 year old male subject who appeared to be intoxicated and was refusing medical attention. Our officers placed that individual into custody and brought him here to the police services building."

A few hours later police asked paramedics to respond to their prisoner cell blocks because the man was in medical distress. He was taken back to the hospital where he died a short time later. Police are releasing few other details, including the man’s name.

They say an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death. At this point it is still a police investigation. Steinwand says the Prince Albert Police Service has not requested a third party for an external review.

In a statement, the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region says an internal review is already underway and they will be cooperating in all investigations into the man’s death.
