It’s a longstanding tradition in Canada – the finance minister wears a new pair of shoes on budget day to forecast what it will mean for the province. Here’s a look back at the last five budget shoes:

2017: Finance Minister Kevin Doherty unveiled a pair of resoled dress shoes. He said it will be a tough budget day so he decided to forgo the tradition of new shoes.

2016: Kevin Doherty didn’t hold back on quality or price. His sporty brown shoes represent transformational change.

2015: Ken Krawetz said he wasn’t going to buy new shoes this year, his last as Saskatchewan’s finance minister before retiring. But, his wife bought him a pair of brown oxfords, making sure he was dressed up for the occasion.

2014: This year, Krawetz sported a pair of black shoes that belonged to his late father. They were about a half size too small – a bit tight, but still comfortable, just like that year’s budget.

2013: Krawetz needed a shoe horn to squeeze into his new shoes for his first budget. But once they were on, they were a perfect fit. He said the shoes represented a difficult, but balanced, budget.
