It's not glamorous, but Rick Morrell says picking up garbage is an important way to show his appreciation for the earth.

“It's earth day so love your mother, right? Clean up the trash that's built up over the months,” said Morrell.

Morrell is one of about a dozen people scowering the ditches off Ross Avenue and McDonald Street for garbage. It's for Earth Day, a worldwide environmental campaign to reduce climate change.

“Picking up litter isn't going to stop climate change or stop toxic pollution, or stop the bad things that are out there that we need to deal with,” said Morell. “But, it's something that you can do without permission, it's something you can see the results of really quickly, and to take some action.”

Elsewhere in Regina, people are showing their support for the movement. At the Regina Public Library Glen Elm Branch, the City of Regina is showing off their earth-friendly practices.

“They brought their worms, so we've got a great vermiculture display going. They are teaching kids and other members of the neighbourhood here how to recycle (and) what is recyclable,” said Mary Lou Van De Bon, Glen Elm Branch library assistant.

And at the Artful Dodger, people are celebrating earth day with live music, yoga, art and various speakers.

“Earth day is a world celebration where they all talk about how you can be more environmentally friendly,” said organizer Noor Mitri. “There's nothing that says you can't put your own twist on it. Our twist is earth day is about celebrating life.”

While many of the events are one-day only, their purpose is to encourage people to celebrate earth day every day.
