A Regina lawyer is launching a class action lawsuit in the wake of the Volkswagen emissions scandal.

Tony Merchant is filing the lawsuit, and says more than 2,000 vehicle owners who feel defrauded have come forward.

Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn resigned Wednesday after the company admitted to faking emissions tests.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency accused VW of installing a so-called "defeat device" in 482,000 cars sold in the U.S.

VW later acknowledged that similar software exists in 11 million diesel cars worldwide and was setting aside 6.5 billion euros to cover the costs of the scandal.

Merchant Law Group is seeking $10,000 in damages for each affected vehicle, which would work out to $400 million in Canada alone.
