A Regina man has been sentenced to four years in prison for brutally beating a woman on the outskirts of the city in August 2011.

Robert Cullen had earlier pleaded guilty to aggravated assault. With credit for time spent on remand, he will serve three years and 3 1/2 months.

After vicioulsy beating the woman, Cullen left her alone without medical assistance. She sustained serious injuries and spent some time in intensive care.

The Crown had sought a five-year sentence for Cullen, while the defence asked for two years.
