A Regina man has been charged in the death of a 33-year-old woman, which police have confirmed as the city's fourth homicide of the year.

Duran Justin Redwood, 26, appeared in court Monday afternoon on a charge of second-degree murder in the death of Celeste Yawney of Regina.

Redwood looked emotional in the prisoner’s box and he initially refused to enter the courtroom. His next appearance is scheduled for June 1.

Yawney was found dead in her home on Ingersoll Crescent around 8:30 a.m. Sunday. Her friends believe she was a victim of domestic violence.

“There’s a lot of broken hearts out there today,” Yawney’s longtime friend, Cristin Hepting, told reporters outside court. “This is awful.”

Neighbours say Yawney had experienced verbal and physical altercations in the past. Police haven't confirmed the specifics of the relationship between Redwood and Yawney.
