A Regina police officer has been charged with assaulting a man during an arrest earlier this year.

Police say 40-year-old Robert Power of Regina, a five-year constable with the Regina Police Service, has been charged with assault causing bodily harm.

The allegation stems from a complaint police received in May that a 44-year-old man had been assaulted by an officer while he was being taken into custody.

The officer was reassigned to administrative duties as soon as the allegation surfaced. An investigation by the Public Complaints Commission resulted in the charge against Power.

He has since been placed on administrative leave and will face a disciplinary hearing. His first court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 17.
