Their cars aren’t out of service, but you might see members of the Regina Police Service on public transit next month.

According to a police board of commissioner’s report, “Operation Bus Cop” will launch Wednesday in partnership with SGI. The report says the vantage point from a city transit bus gives police officers a clear view of drivers who haven’t received the message about distracted driving laws.

SGI’s traffic focus for the month of March is distracted driving. According to the report, distracted driving is the leading cause of traffic fatalities in Saskatchewan. The police program is meant to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving. Other cities have had success with similar police and transit programs.

Laws prohibiting cellphone use have existed for several years, but new provincial laws came into effect Jan. 1 that further restricted cellphone use while driving and created harsher punishments for repeat offenders.

Police officers will begin riding the bus on March 1, but the official launch for the program is Wednesday morning.
