Regina motorists are about to see a lot more orange.

The city plans on spending a record $21.7 million on road construction this year.

Some of the major projects include paving work on the Ring Road near McDonald Street,

Victoria Avenue East will also get a $9.8 million facelift to improve and repair that stretch of road.

“We’re going to replace the bridges under Victoria Avenue and we’re going to widen Victoria Avenue, as well,” said Regina Mayor Michael Fougere.

“Widening the street for capacity is important but those bridges are past their lifespan, we really do have to get those fixed.”

Last year, city council approved a one per cent mill rate increase to improve local roads. Council also established a residential road renewal program that will invest $7.5 million this year.

“We’re actually going to see a lot of work on good and fair roads,” said the city’s Karen Gasmo.

“That may seem off for some people but the theory behind it is that you preserve roads before they get bad.”

Drivers are asked to slow down in construction zones and watch out for workers.
