The File Hills Qu’Appelle Tribal Council announced on Monday that Regina will host the 2017 First Nations Summer Games.

About 5,000 athletes, coaches, chaperones and officials from across the province will gather for the event from August 6-11, 2017.

Youth between the ages of 13-18 will compete in archery, athletics, beach volleyball, canoeing, cross country, golf, lacrosse (showcase), soccer and softball.

Elaine Chicoose, tribal vice chief and games chair, said the games’ vision is to empower First Nations youth through excellence in sport.

Organizers said extensive preparation for the games already began -- thanks to donations and support from various organizations and community members.
