Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive lineman Tearrius George has been charged after an alleged domestic assault.

Regina police say officers were dispatched to a home on the 5600 block of Gordon Road for a report of an assault on April 28.

A 33-year-old woman told police there had been an argument between she and her male partner.

It’s alleged the argument escalated to the point that the man physically assaulted the woman, grabbing her throat and pushing her up against a wall.

Police say the woman did not sustain any apparent physical injuries in the incident. They say a one-year-old child was present at the time of the alleged assault.

George, 33, has been charged with assault. He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court May 12.

Earlier Tuesday, George announced he’s retiring from the CFL in a statement issued by the Riders.

"I am stepping away from the game to focus on a personal issue," George said. "I would ask for people to respect my family's privacy during this time."
