Saskatchewan had the highest volunteer rate in the country in 2013, according to a new survey.

Statistics Canada says 56 per cent of people aged 15 and older in the province volunteered their time that year. Manitoba’s volunteer rate was second highest at 52 per cent. Both were above the national average of 44 per cent.

The rate of volunteerism was lowest in Quebec, where only about a third of people aged 15 and older volunteered.

In terms of charitable giving, Newfoundland and Labrador had the highest proportion of donors with 87 per cent, while B.C. had the lowest with 78 per cent.

Albertans donated the most on average ($863), followed by people in B.C. ($704) and Manitoba ($699). Average donations were lowest in Quebec ($264) and New Brunswick ($345).
