CARLYLE, Sask. -- A Saskatchewan man has been fined more than $5,000 for unlawfully hunting elk in the Kipling area.

Lex Bartsch, who is 45 and from Indian Head, pleaded guilty in provincial court recently to three charges under the Saskatchewan Wildlife Act.

Conservation officers investigated a report last December of a herd of elk being shot at.

The officers found that a cow elk had been killed and field dressed, and a young bull elk was left to waste.

An injured elk calf had to be destroyed.

Bartsch has been suspended from hunting for one year.
