Saskatchewan has announced legislation that will allow it to privatize dozens of government-owned liquor stores.
Crown Investments Corporation Minister Don McMorris introduced amendments Tuesday to the Crown Corporations Public Ownership Act.
The changes will remove the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority from the list of Crown corporations subject to the act.
McMorris says that will allow government to convert 40 of its 75 government liquor outlets to private stores.
He says it will also create 12 new private stores.
The plans to change the Crown protection legislation were announced in the throne speech and follow through on a promise the Saskatchewan Party made during the election campaign earlier this spring to privatize some liquor stores.
"This will give Saskatchewan consumers more choice, more convenience, and more competitive pricing," McMorris said in a news release.
