Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall admits there are challenges with a growing population, but he says progress is being made in addressing issues such as affordable housing.
New numbers from Statistics Canada show Saskatchewan's population has hit an all-time high of 1,057,884 after growing by more than 5,000 people between April 1 and July 1.
Wall says it's better to deal with the challenges that come with growth, than the challenges that come with losing people.
He says a dwindling population erodes the tax base and that means less revenue to balance the books and to fund health and education.
The government notes Saskatchewan's population is bucking the national trend by getting younger.
The median age is now 37.3 years -- second-lowest among the provinces.
