The threat of flooding this spring has the Saskatchewan government scrambling to settle disaster claims from last year.
The province is adding 30 temporary employees to the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP) in an effort to speed up the flow of cash to people affected by last year's flooding.
Only 1,100 of the more than 5,900 flood claims from last year have been settled. Another 3,900 claimants have received portions of their payout. To date, the province has paid out more than $14.5 million.
PDAP staff will begin working in two separate shifts six days a week, the province says. Officials will also process claims based on their relative size and risk, among other streamlining efforts.
The flood of claims from last year is the largest in the history of the program.
