SaskPower is giving each of the province's two universities $3.5 million in funding to advance clean energy research while developing skilled workers.

Rob Norris, the minister responsible for SaskPower, says the funding at the University of Regina will go toward new faculty chairs for advancing research in carbon capture and storage.

Last April, SaskPower announced the green technology would be incorporated into a $1.2-billion project to rebuild an aging coal-fired generation unit at the Boundary Dam power plant.

Funding at the University of Saskatchewan will be allocated to the power systems engineering program.

SaskPower will work with the university to ensure the curriculum aligns with the company's future business needs.

The Crown corporation says in the coming months, it will explore similar partnerships with other post-secondary institutions in the province, with a focus on aboriginal programming.
