Motorcycle owners in Saskatchewan will soon have the option to choose lower-cost injury coverage.

Don McMorris, the minister responsible for Saskatchewan Government Insurance, says the new option is for motorcycle owners who feel they require fewer benefits in the event of a collision.

Starting in 2016, motorcycle owners will be able to choose the new reduced package of no-fault injury benefits instead of the full package or tort coverage.

The insurance rate for any of the three options is dependent on the make and model of the motorcycle and its claims history.

The government says it’s still considering other changes to the injury coverage program, which could be made by this summer.

Legislation for the additional motorcycle injury option is expected to be introduced this fall and passed early next year.
