The use of licence-plate scanners in police cars across Saskatchewan is being expanded.

Thirteen police vehicles in the province are currently equipped with infra-red technology that can scan plates for such things as stolen cars or even suspected drunk drivers.

Saskatchewan Government Insurance says it wants to install the system in more cruisers to increase road safety.

SGI has already spent about $485,000 on the units, which cost about $20,000 each.
