An Environment Canada air quality advisory issued due to smoke from the B.C. wildfires has been lifted in central Saskatchewan but remains in place across the province’s south.
The advisory was lifted in Saskatoon and surrounding area around 3 p.m. Monday. It now covers the south, from the Leader to Moosomin areas, and includes Regina.
"High levels of air pollution have developed due to smoke from forest fires in B.C. Smoke plumes moving over portions of southern Saskatchewan from forest fires in BC have resulted in deteriorated air quality in the area," the advisory reads.
According to Environment Canada, people may experience coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors and those with heart or lung diseases are especially at risk.
It’s not clear how long the smoke is expected to remain in the Saskatchewan region.
