A young figure skater from Saskatchewan has died after a weekend crash in Manitoba.

Patricia Hole, a figure skating coach from Virden, Man., said 16-year-old Zoe Lesy died when her vehicle went off a road in the Rural Municipality of Sifton on Sunday night and became submerged in the Assiniboine River.

Lesy was from Carnduff, Sask., but moved to Virden for figure skating and attended Virden Collegiate Institute.

Hole said Lesy, a Grade 10 student, loved her life in Virden.

"She was just a happy girl with what was happening in her life," said Hole.

Hole said she had coached Lesy in figure skating for about eight years.

"I don't think she had an enemy," said Hole. "She just worked and had a smile on her face."

Monday was a day off for students but Tuesday, Fort La Bosse Superintendent Barry Pitz said the school division has activated its full trauma response team.

"Today's going to be a difficult day," said Pitz.

Lesy was heavily involved with the figure skating community in Virden, he said.

Pitz said even though Lesy was only at the school a short time she left her mark with friends and classmates.

"It's a tragedy. She's a very young lady and she'll be deeply missed."
