A teen has been handed the maximum sentence for fatally stabbing a Regina woman at a party last year.

Emotions ran raw in the courtroom Thursday as the girl, now 18, was sentenced to three years of intensive rehabilitative custody and supervision for killing Jasmine Smith.

With credit for time served, she will spend a further 16 months in custody, followed by eight months of supervision in the community.

Court heard the 18-year-old victim caught the girl making out with Smith's younger brother during a party at the family's home last June.

An argument erupted and Smith asked the girl to leave but she refused. Smith slapped the girl and the accused punched her, then grabbed a steak knife from the kitchen counter and stabbed the victim in the chest.

Smith and others at the party believed she was fine, until she collapsed while walking to her father's house.

She was taken to Regina General Hospital, where she underwent surgery. However, massive blood loss had left her brain dead and she died a day later after her family decided to take her off life support.

The accused was originally charged with second-degree murder in the death but later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter.

In a victim impact statement, Smith's mother, Lori, said the fatal stabbing was a senseless act.

"A mother shouldn't have to bury her 18-year-old daughter," she said.

"The pain, at most times, is unbearable."

Defence lawyer Kirk Rondeau described the killing as a case of "excessive self-defence."

A pre-sentence report concluded the teen is a high risk to reoffend. She struggles with substance abuse and has a lengthy criminal record.

The accused, who cannot be named, showed little emotion as the sentence was read. She offered to speak to Smith's family in court, but was turned down by the victim's mother.

Lori Smith declined to comment on the sentence outside the courthouse.

As part of her sentence, the accused will be banned from owning firearms for two years. She was also ordered to submit a DNA sample to the national databank.
