Cheers from Rider fans at Mosaic Stadium on Saturday night could be heard from blocks away. While the Riders defeated the B.C. Lions, the crowd that gathered Sunday morning weren’t concerned about the victory.

“What we’re asking for is a referendum on the funding of the stadium and whether or not tax payers want to contribute to the stadium,” said Dawn Thomas, organizer of the occupy the stadium protest.

Thomas and other volunteers have been occupying the stadium since Friday in hopes of gathering more signatures for their petition. Currently, they have more than 6,600. Thomas has until Nov. 8 to collect the remaining 13,000 required to submit the petition to city council.

There are misconceptions about what the petition is trying accomplish, Thomas said. "The most common is that we're anti-progress, anti-Regina, anti-stadium, anti-Riders. You pick it, anti-anything. People don't understand that we just want to have a voice,” she said.
